چکیده

The paper tries to relate inequality, occupational choice and long run wealth. Defining the unskilled as poor, skilled group as middle class and entrepreneurs as rich the paper focusesstarting from a huge middle class relative to the rich along with a higher fraction of borrowing entrepreneurs within the rich group, an economy converges with a very low wealth level. In other words, one needs to have little bit inequality (in terms of wealth dispersion) to start with for long run prosperity. A high fraction of middle class is not necessarily welfare maximizing and education subsidy is not always welfare enhancing, a tax on education might be gainful for an economy in some cases. Occupational choice, incentives and wealth distribution

We consider a model of occupational choice in large economies where individuals differ in their wealth endowment. Individuals can remain self-employed or engage in productive matches with another individual, i.e., form firms. Matches are subject to a moral hazard problem with limited liability. The division of the gains from such matches is determined by competitive forces. When the incentive p...

Development Dynamics in an Economy with Credit Rationing and Occupational Choice

The paper presents a general equilibrium model of a developing economy, in which the wealth distribution, the interest rate and the wage are endogenous and interact dynamically. A credit market imperfection due to limited enforcement results in credit rationing and occupational choice constraints, leading to inefficiency. Credit rationing is shown to persist as the economy develops. We also arg...

Wealth Distribution and Self-Employment in a Developing Economy

The extent of entrepreneurial activity in an economy with poorly developed capital markets depends on the distribution of wealth, though in potentially complex ways. A nonparametric model of the wealth effect on self-employment is estimated using micro data on the occupational choices of return migrants in Tunisia. Controls for heterogeneity are included, and tests are made for selection bias a...

The distribution of housing wealth in 16 European countries: accounting for institutional differences

Housing wealth is the largest source of household wealth, but we know little about the distribution of housing wealth and how institutions have shaped this distribution. Subsidies for homeownership, privatisation of social housing and mortgage finance liberalisation are likely to have influenced the distribution of housing wealth in recent decades. To examine their impact, we describe housing w...

In other words, parents cannot borrow from their children’s future earnings. There is a continuum of occupations with continuously varying entry (educati...
